Harumanis is an iconic fruit of Malaysia, specifically in the state of Perlis. During its harvest season, however, hundreds of tonnes of Harumanis parts like seeds, leaves, and skin are discarded, because people only treasure the flesh of the Harumanis for its aromatic, fragrance, and sweet taste. People are willing to pay up to RM 65 per kg to savor this mango variety. Regrettably, of the 1 kg they pay, only 500 grams accounts for the flesh, while the remaining 500g goes to waste. This contributes to the waste management issues and raises the environmental concerns. Ideally, all parts of these mangoes should be fully utilized, including the skin and seeds, rather than being needlessly thrown away.
